Labor day is the unofficial end of summer, and is usually spent soaking up the sun at the pool or on a patio eating a hot dog – but why does the holiday exist? On June 28, 1894 Labor Day was signed into law during the industrial revolution to celebrate the wins workers unions achieved to protect workers from exploitation. Which is where our current work week (Mon – Fri, 9am – 5 pm) comes from.
Since it is a federal holiday, many have this day off and choose to spend it doing leisurely activities. It is a good reminder to take a break and have some fun.
Taking a break can be seen as a luxury or a privilege, however it is more than taking a day off. It is being intentional about time spent off the clock (and not mindlessly scrolling your life away). Breaks can be days long or a short amount of time. Working self-care into your routine allows you to be the best version of yourself.
Examples include:
Taking a nap
Taking a walk or spending time outdoors
Meditation/ reflection
Deep breathing
Listening to music
Watching a movie
Spending time with loved ones
Taking a hot shower or bath
Read a book
Clean or organize your space
Having a sit down meal
Enjoying a beverage
If we don’t prioritize rest and taking care of ourselves, our bodies will take one for us – and it is usually at an inconvenient time or due to illness/injury. How can you improve your self-care routine?
