Imagine this: I’m sitting with a client and we’re discussing their romantic relationship. I can tell by the client’s body language and vague word choices that they want to talk about their sex life but they are nervous/uncomfortable with the topic / aren’t sure how to bring it up / unsure of how I’ll react. I will ask a direct question / use more forward language / invite the client to talk about the subject if they are comfortable. Usually they feel relief that they can talk about this or any other ‘taboo’ topic in therapy.

As therapists we work to normalize these topics and want our clients to feel safe to discuss these hard topics, because THEY ARE A PART OF LIFE. We want to have these conversations so that people seek help/treatment and feel less shame around them, because oftentimes they do.

Here are some of the topics I’ve discussed with clients:
Sex / porn
Poop/ Bathroom needs or habits
Periods
Alternative relationships
Suicide / suicidal thoughts
Relationship with food
Chronic pain
Money
Drug or alcohol use / harm reduction
Religion
Personality disorders
Abortion
Trauma / PTSD
Politics
Death and dying
How hard some relationships are
Breakups
Burnout
Gender or sexual identity
Use of profanity

If a client and I have a conversation about this and they need more information I provide other education materials (podcasts or books) or if they need more specialized treatment I will refer them to someone who might be able to help.
