It’s the time of year where we look back on the last 365 days. We review the wins and challenges; we notice the changes that happened even if we didn’t want things to change. Upon thinking of these things, we decide what we want to change and resolve to be different once the ball drops and January begins. However, we know that time doesn’t ‘start over.’ There are only markers of time.

Resolutions often fail because it is often a declaration of big change, often without a plan and goals that are broken down and more attainable. Once the new commitments become hard and we falter, the shame spiral sets and we stop.

Instead, find some time to sit with yourself in a quiet space and grab some paper and a pen. Write down those wins and challenges, and add how they made you feel then and now that you’re farther out; are somehow different because of them?
*Without judgment* give yourself an objective once over.

Then think about how you want to show up next year, and journal about how you might do that. What will it require of you?
Do you want to be more outspoken?
Do you want to make more connections professionally?
Do you want to find more peace?
Do you want to manage your time better?
Do you want to work on taming those negative thoughts?

Think about your ‘why.’ Why do you want to change, what’s motivating you internally?

You may also think of a word that you want to be your intention for the next year:
Vulnerability
Connection
Kindness
Organization
Humor
Challenge
Peace
Mindfulness

Once you have all this you can then begin to set some goals, to make these changes more attainable. Check out our blog on goal setting here.
