Since March 2020, the way we do therapy has changed drastically. Gone are the days where you had to drive to the office to sit on the couch and back again. Today you can chat with your counselor via video, which has made accessibility to treatment increase significantly.

While you can do this from anywhere, there are things to consider before beginning your session, so that you get the most out of it.

1. Be on time – You and your therapists’ time is valuable. If you’re running late you don’t get the full benefit of your session. Be sure to inform your therapist if you’re running late and be aware of the late policy.
2. Have a solid internet connection – Having the call drop often or having to repeat yourself repeatedly takes time away from being able to process your thoughts and feelings.
3. Have the link prepared – Depending on your therapist, you may have to download an app or follow a link in order to have a session. Be sure you know the plan ahead of time.
4. Charge your device – Whether you’re using your phone or computer, have it charged or a charger nearby. If your device dies or you have to go look for the cord, this can also cut into your session.
5. Have everything you need – Be sure to use the restroom ahead of time, getting your emotional support coffee, water, tissues, blanket, ect. Make yourself comfy.
6. Keep distractions to a minimum – Whether you’re at home or the office, make sure you have minimum distractions during your session – phone calls, emails, pets, kids, ect.
7. Verbalize your processing – Because your call is virtual and can only see part of you, your therapist can’t see all of your body language, so information about what’s going on for you is limited. Be sure to verbalize your thoughts, emotions, and what is happening for you physically in the moment.
8. Stay informed of your coverage – If you are going through your insurance, be sure virtual sessions are covered.
9. DO NOT do your virtual call while you are driving – It is unsafe. Wait until you are in a place that you can be in park.
10. Have proper attire on – While working from home allows you to be comfortable, be sure that you are in attire that is appropriate for the session.

Here at Sonder, we offer both virtual and in office sessions. Follow up to today to schedule!
