Take a moment to reflect on where in your life you are treating yourself unkindly or putting yourself second. Notice how you feel emotionally and physically when you think of a scenario where you are doing this.
Is it sleeping less?
Over-working?
Saying yes when you want to say no?
Is it scrolling through social media for the 20th time today?
Are you avoiding something or someone?
Eating food that makes you feel crappy?
Drinking too much caffeine and not enough water?
Staying in bed all day?
Now imagine what it would be like if you did the opposite and treated yourself kindly and put your well-being first. Again notice how you feel emotionally and physically as you imagine. Do you notice anything different?
I’ve been in the mental health field almost ten years and I have to remind myself everyday to be kind to myself.
Drink my water
Go to bed at a decent time
Don’t scroll too much
Eat my fruits, veggies, and protein
Only have a certain amount of caffeine in the morning
Get fresh air and move my body (walk, yoga, lift, ect)
Work to address things in a timely manner
Taking care of ourselves doesn’t have to be complicated. At its core it’s taking care of yourself, mentally, physically, spiritually, emotionally.
The unlearning and relearning comes when we realize that not being kind to ourselves or even hurting ourselves is no longer serving us. At one time it may have, but it’s time to let that go.
Do one kind thing for yourself today. Every small step counts.
