Socializing can be fun – but it can also be exhausting. It can be scary, intimidating,
overwhelming. Add in a global pandemic, conflict surrounding everything from politics to sports
loyalties, bad weather, driving conditions, and you can find yourself experiencing increasing
anxiety when having to leave your safe place. However, we know that social connection is an
important part of life and can be a major benefit for our mental health. If you find yourself
struggling with social anxiety, try these tips:
1 – Recognize negative thoughts and try to challenge them. Utilizing positive affirmations,
positive self-talk, and asking for evidence for your concerns can help to rewire your thoughts.
2 – Start small! Step out of your comfort zone gradually. Start with a coffee date with a trusted
friend for an hour, then work your way up as you slowly get more comfortable in various social
situations.
3 – Reward all of your efforts, no matter how big or small. Even if something went wrong or the
outcome was different than you imagined, you can still be proud of yourself for trying!
Leaning on friends, family, and other support people can be important and helpful, as well. If
you find yourself experiencing increasing social anxiety, talking to a therapist or counselor may
also help. Remember that you are not alone, and find what works for you!
