“Take a walk” and “get some fresh air/sunshine” is often a suggestion therapists give when discussing coping skills with clients. Here’s why: It improves your mood because vitamin D is an important component in the functioning of the brain and body. Walking is also bi-lateral stimulation (left, right, left, right) and helps process thoughts and emotions.
Taking a walk won’t cure your problem. it does however give you time to think, to move, to breathe, and to take in the world around you. By the time you get back from walking around the block you might feel 10% better or have found a distraction from whatever was bothering you.
Sometimes putting your shoes on and walking out the door is that hardest part. You’re in your comfy clothes, you only have a short time, you have something to do later, ect. Ignore your mood and follow your coping skills plan.
Grab your shoes, water and some sunscreen and get out there!
